Fred Schmidt Ends His Life By Own Hand. Lifeless Body Found Hanging in Garage At His Farm.
Fred Schmidt, 54 farmer living two miles north of Remsen, took his own life sometime Sunday evening by hanging himself.
County Cornoner S.H. Luken and Sheriff Frank Scholer were notified and went out to make an investigation.
Mr. Schmidt was apparently in the best of health and spirits Sunday and spent the afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. Marius Bogh, who lives in the same vicinity.
After supper John Schmidt, his brother and the Bogh family drove to the Fred Schmidt place to take Fred with them to attend a show in Remsen. They found the house all dark and then looked around the barn and garage. On going into the garage the brother found the lifeless body dangling by a rope thrown across a rafter.
The coroner pronounced it a case of suicide. There was apparently no reason for the act, according to relatives. Mr. Schmidt was in apparently good health and was comfortably situated. He had lived in the Remsen community where he grew up and had farmed there the past thirty-five years. He was a single man and is survived by his brother, John Schmidt and his sister, Mrs. Marius Bogh. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, December 1, 1942, page 1.

Note: Fred Schmidt is buried in the Remsen city cemetery. He was born Oct. 29, 1888 and died Nov. 29, 1942.
