LeMars, Iowa -- Myrtle L. Parkinson, 92, of LeMars died Tuesday, March 17, 1992, at The Abbey in LeMars.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in LeMars with Pastor Fred Gums of LeMars Bible Church officiating. There will be no visitation. The body was willed to the University of South Dakota School of medicine for medical research.
Mrs. Parkinson was born Sept. 18, 1899, in Van Horne, Iowa, the daughter of John and Melissa Thompson. She came to LeMars to attend Westmar College (formerly Western Union College) where she majored in music. She married Carol Parkinson June 19, 1923, at the family home in Van Horne. The couple lived in Sioux City where he taught music at Morningside College. In 1930, they moved to LeMars.
Mrs. Parkinson was organist for many years at Hildreth Memorial Church (College Church.) She was active in numerous organizations including Women's Club, Mothers Club, and LeMars Bible Church. She served as Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star and was a member of the Past Matron's Club.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Helen and Ken Vance of LeMars and Jan and Rich Schultz of LeMars; a son, C.J. and his wife, Connie of St. Louis, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Gary, Tom, Dick, and Kirk Vance, Dave, Paula and Alan Schultz and Amy Parkinson; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Harry O. (LeVon) Thompson and Mrs. Hubert (Ruth) Parkinson, both of LeMars; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by six brothers, including Rev. H.O. Thompson and two sisters, Mrs. Nettie M. DeWall and a sister in infancy.
