Anthony “Tony” Ruhland, 90, of Le Mars passed away gently Saturday, February 26, 2011, surrounded by family, in the heart of his daughter’s home in Apple Valley, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday March 5, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars with Reverend Kevin Richter and Reverend Dan Greving concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery - Neptune, rural Hinton, with Military Honors provided by the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241. Visitations will begin at 3:00 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars, where there will be a Parish rosary at 4:00 p.m., a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary. Visitation will resume on Saturday morning at the Church for one hour prior to the funeral. Arrangements are with the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home of Le Mars.

Pallbearers will be Derek Sitzmann, Aaron Sitzmann, Beau Sitzmann, Ethen Bak, Justin Wenzel, Levi Jones, Marcus Jones, and Josh Jones.

Anthony Michael Ruhland was born July 28, 1920 on the family farm south of Le Mars in Stanton Township, the son of John Michael and Elizabeth (Sitzmann) Ruhland. Tony served his country overseas, during WWII, with the U.S. Army. He married Doris M. “Dottie” Conley on May 22, 1950 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church – Neptune. Following their marriage the couple farmed for many years south of Le Mars in Stanton Township. They moved into Le Mars in 1991.

Tony was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars, a Honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council #1466 and the 4th. Degree Knights of Columbus, Michael J. McGivney Council 3088 in Le Mars. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241 and the Carpenter’s Union Local #948.

Tony enjoyed carpentry, traveling, flying, golfing, dancing and he loved to celebrate with family and friends.

Survivors include his nine children: Deborah (Mark) Jones of Apple Valley, MN, Ann (Kevin) Thompson of Lompoc, CA, Becky (Lonnie) Wenzel of Kingsley, IA, Keith (Michelle) Ruhland of Mission Viejo, CA, Rodney Ruhland of Lake View Terrace, CA, Tom Ruhland of Le Mars, IA, Kati (Dave) Bak of Merrill, IA, Tony Ruhland of Hinton, IA, and Heidi (Mike) Roberts of Le Mars, IA; 29 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister: Betty Meylor of Le Mars; a sister-in-law Doris Ruhland of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dottie on March 21, 2008; a daughter Terri Ruhland; three brothers: Francis, Art and Ben Ruhland; and two sisters: Sr. Mary Avila Ruhland, O.S.F. and Lorene Droessler.
