Jim McDermott, 71, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Graveside Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Dr. Fran Pettigrew of First Baptist Church in Eagle Grove will officiate. Visitation with family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2011 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.
John James McDermott, Jr. was born October 25, 1939 in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of John James, Sr. and Hazel (McLary) McDermott. He was raised in Eagle Grove and graduated from high school in 1958. During high school, he began working for Fareway Grocery. He attended Junior College in Fort Dodge, Iowa and one semester at Drake University in Des Moines.
Following his schooling, he began working again at Fareway in Eagle Grove where he was a department manager. He was later transferred to Osceola and Ottumwa, before settling in Le Mars, Iowa. While in Le Mars, he served many of those years as Assistant manager. In 2002, he retired after over 44 years of service.
Jim won many trophies at bowling and racing his convertibles. He was an avid golfer and loved watching sports. It was not unusual to find him at the local ball parks or football fields. He loved the Chicago Cubs and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and followed them to Hawaii when they played a bowl game there. He also loved to watch the Minnesota Vikings and attended many of their games.
Survivors include one sister, Myris Ray of Marshalltown, IA; two sisters in law: Dolly Myers of Eagle Grove, IA and Doreen Myers of Jacksonville, NC; two nephews: Robert Myers of Des Moines, IA, and Garrett Myers of Humboldt, IA; five nieces: Madonna Opdahl of Rodondo Beach, CA, Mary Curley of Marshalltown, IA, Debra Malsom of Nevada, IA, Melody Ries from Brunswick, ME, and Melissa Wagoner of Jacksonville, NC; his special friends: Heath and Pam Husk of Le Mars, Iowa, and their children, Steven and Joey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a brother in law.
