Kent Schwiesow, 64, of Le Mars passed away Thursday, February 10, 2011 at his home.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ with Reverend Jan Christensen officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars, will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the church. The afternoon will conclude with a 4:00 p.m. Prayer Service. Visitations will continue Monday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
Pallbearers will be Todd Wendt, Calvin Kooiker, Bill Messerole, Gabriel Pieper, Ryan Schwiesow, Devin Schwiesow, and Michael Ludwigs.
Kenton Lee Schwiesow was born March 26, 1946 in Hawarden, Iowa, to Henry and Naomi (Waterman) Schwiesow. Kent attended and graduated from West Sioux High School in Hawarden. Following high school, Kent served his country in the United States Army from 1966 to 1967 as a Military Police Officer during the Vietnam War. Kent was united in marriage to Pamela Juffer on June 22, 1968, at the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton. Kent graduated with his undergraduate degree in teaching from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He accepted a position as the Special Education instructor with West High School in Sioux City. He later continued his education at USD, earning his Master’s in Education, and further earned a Specialist Degree in Education. He worked as a Special Education Consultant for AEA 12 & 4. He has served as Assistant Superintendent with the Le Mars Community Schools, Superintendent of schools in Ida Grove, Superintendent of schools in Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Assistant Superintendent of schools in Sioux City, and returned to Le Mars to be the Assistant Superintendent for several years until his retirement in 2005.
Kent had attended the Presbyterian United Church of Christ where he had served as a Deacon and Elder. He also had been a member of Lions Club, American Legion, and several education organizations throughout his career. Kent enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, computers, and politics. He especially enjoyed his time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Pam of Le Mars; 2 sons, Brett Schwiesow of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Tyler Schwiesow and his wife Emily of Des Moines, IA and their children, Joseph and Eliza; his siblings: Jim (Ingrid) Schwiesow of Orange City, Marcene (Les) Ludwigs of Ireton, and Melvin Schwiesow of Ireton; his mother-in-law, Betty Juffer of Hawarden; in-laws: Lynn Juffer of Ireton and Peggy Juffer (presently an elementary school principal in Kuwait); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kent was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Naomi (Waterman) Schwiesow; his father-in-law, Preston Juffer; brother-in-law Ray Prokop; and several aunts and uncles. ©
