Richard Aten Swearingen was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, February 1, 1840, and died April 4, 1909, of paralysis, aged 69 years, 2 months and three days. In May 1860, he settled at Comanche, Iowa; after the death of his father in the following year, he, with his brother, Alexander, enlisted in the civil war as a private under captain Henry Muhs, in the 8th Iowa Infantry, Co. A. After his return to Iowa be was married to Miss Elizabeth Livingston, of Clinton county. May 7, 1867; after a residence of one year in Clinton county they moved to Scranton, Green county, and later to Pottawattomie county, where they resided until 1892, when they moved to Plymouth county and settled on a farm near Kingsley where they have since resided.

Mr. and Mrs. Swearingen were the parents of ten children, two of whom have preceded him to the better land.
