Three Surviving Members of Biddlecome Post at Akron Remain

EMANUEL SPITTLE DIES

Came to Iowa Shortly After Close of Strife

Emanuel Spittle, a veteran of the civil war passed away at his home in Akron, Sunday, at the age of 83 years.

Emanuel Spittle, was born December 25, 1842, in Staffordshire, England. At the age of 14 years he came with his parents to the United States and settled in southern Michigan. On January 1st, 1863, he was united in marriage with Jennie Roberts. To this union four children were born. They were Charles Emanuel, Cora Lillian, Chauncey Delno, and Jessie Bell, all of whom except Cahuncey Delno preceded him to the great beyond.

Cavalryman in War

During the civil war he enlisted in Troop F, of the Third Michigan cavalry and served for two year and fourteen days.

After his discharge he settled in Marshall county, Iowa where he engaged in agriculture for four years and then came to Plymouth county locating near Remsen. He was at one time foreman for Irving D. Smith, a large landowner here in early days. Mr. Spittle later moved to Akron and farmed in that vicinity. About eighteen years ago he moved to the town of Akron. He and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1923. He is survived by his wife and one son, Chauncey Spittle of Chokio, Minn.

The funeral was held at Akron, Wednesday in the Methodist church, Rev. G. J. Poppenheimer, of Onawa Officiating. Members of Horschler Post American Legion acted as pall bearers and fired a salute over the grave.

Comrades Pay Honor

The deceased was a member of Biddlecome Post No. 461 G.A.R. Only three members of this post remain Uriah Keniston, W. W. Neal, and J. Diller, who attended the funeral.

Mower Post G.A.R. of LeMars was represented by W.S. Freeman, Wallace Winslow, and John C. Ruble and Louis E. Brick camp of LeMars, Spanish American was veterans by Jas. A. Sickler.
