Ronald H. "Ron" Burkard, of Le Mars, a Plymouth County native and lifelong resident, died Tuesday March 1, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, following a brief illness.

Ronald Henry Burkard was born March 14, 1932, on the family farm northeast of Le Mars, the son of Henry and Catherine (Ruether) Burkard. He grew up in the Le Mars area and received his education at St. Joseph' Catholic School.

In 1950, Ron entered into the United States Army and served his country overseas in Korea. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 22, 1954, and returned home to Le Mars. Ron married Delores Ziebeck Jan. 30, 1954, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Moorhead, Minn. Following their marriage, the couple farmed their entire married lives in Elgin Township.

In recent years Ron and Delores found time to spend many years as volunteers for the Life Skills Training Center in Le Mars and were great advocates and volunteers for the Plymouth County Historical Museum.

Ron had also worked part time with Standard Office and later with Perkins Office Solutions in Le Mars, for the last several years.

Ron had been a very avid bicyclist for many years and had participated in many well known organized rides, such as R.A.G.B.R.A.I. in Iowa, B.R.A.N. in Nebraska, and G.R.A.B.R.A.W.R. and S.A.G.B.R.A. in Wisconsin. Ron and Delores were very actively involved in square dancing for many years.

Ron was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241 in Le Mars, and a longtime member of Pheasants Forever.

He loved the outdoors and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years Delores Burkard of Le Mars; four children and their spouses: Dave and Shirley Burkard of Brunsville, Donna and Fred Mills of St. Charles, Mo., Lois and Doug Jackson of Council Bluffs, and Daniel and Linda Burkard of Shacklefords, Va.; a summertime daughter, Claudia Koenig and her husband Mike of Council Bluffs; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Robert (Abby) Burkard of Le Mars and Chris (Gloria) Burkard of Kerrville, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two grandchildren: Angeline and Troy Michael.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, with the Rev. Bill McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there will be a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Dave Burkard, Daniel Burkard, Fred Mills, Doug Jackson, Mike Koenig and Zachary Burkard.
