Cliff Clarey, 81, of Akron, Iowa passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 24, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2011 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron, Iowa. Monsignor Richard Zenk will celebrate. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 28, 2011, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Parish Rosary, all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa. Laurence Clifford Clarey was born April 3, 1929 in Akron, Iowa, the son of Edward (Clifford) and Iva (Belt) Clarey. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. He attended country school near Akron, Iowa while helping his father on the family farm. Following his schooling, he continued helping on the farm and worked for the Farmer’s Coop in Akron.

He was united in marriage to Gladys McCorkell on October 27, 1949 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. Following their marriage, they farmed in South Dakota until a farming accident left him unable to continue farming.

In 1957, they moved to Southern California. Cliff went to work for the Pan Pacific Auditorium until the mid 60’s, when he went to work for Justice Brothers Oil Company. Following his time there, he worked for Wynn’s Oil Company as a warehouse manager. Following his retirement in 1988, they moved back to Akron to be closer to their family.

Cliff was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed having coffee with family and his many friends. Cliff also enjoyed crafting wind chimes and doing yard work. But most of all, he loved the times spent with family, especially his grandchildren. He always enjoyed watching them participate in their many activities. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife of over 61 years, Gladys of Akron; his children: Larry Clarey (Verna) of Akron, Peggy Wright (Bob) of Medford, OR, Patty McLain (Bob) of Glendora, CA, Teresa Moring of Akron, Dennis Clarey of Denver, CO, and Joe Clarey (Jennifer) of Akron; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 2 yet to be born; his brother: Robert Clarey (Lois) of Akron; 2 sisters: Phyllis Ludwigs (Gerd) of Akron and LaVonne Henry of Akron; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers: Tom Clarey, Jim Clarey, Bill Clarey, and Clarence Clarey; and 2 sisters: Mary McIlvenna and Irene Greenleaf.
