Merrill, Iowa – Edward W. Marienau, 84, of Merrill, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 17, 2010 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars, Iowa. Rev. Greg Gabriel will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill with military honors provided by Olson – Halweg American Legion Post #125 of Merrill. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. to greet friends with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation on Friday prior to the funeral. Edward Wallace Marienau was born on January 10, 1926 in Brunsville, Iowa, the son of Edward and Caroline (Mattas) Marienau. He attended school in Brunsville and Merrill, Iowa. Ed worked as a carpenter following his education. On September 20, 1950 Ed was inducted into the United States Army. He proudly served during the Korean War and attained the rank of Sergeant with the 11th Armored Calvary. Ed earned his Honorable Discharge on September 20, 1952. He returned to the area and continued his lifelong career as a carpenter.

On October 24, 1953, Ed and Shirley Iona Smith were united in marriage at Merrill, Iowa. Ed was a member of the Local Carpenters’ Union #948 in Sioux City, Iowa. He worked on numerous projects in the area and worked closely with W.A. Klinger for many years. He retired in 1980 following some health issues. Shirley passed away on April 28, 1984.

Ed was a 50 year member of Olson – Halweg American Legion Post # 125 of Merrill. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and sharing a cup of coffee with his friends.

He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his son and his family, Brandon and Julie Marienau of Sioux Falls, SD, Andrea of Sioux Falls, Megan and Stephen Goter and Alexander of Mascoutah, IL; his daughter and her family, Kristi Fischer of Sioux City, IA, Chad and RaShell Fischer, Madison and Bryce of Hinton, IA, Tara Fischer and her special friend Rick Barrett and Kaden of Sioux City, IA, Kyle Fischer and his special friend Amanda Naab, Kenna and Alexus of Merrill, IA; his daughter and her family, Susan and Greg Miller of Merrill, IA, Trent Miller of Sioux City, IA and Christopher Miller of Fullerton, CA; a brother Melvin Marienau of Le Mars, IA; three sisters Marian Baker of Le Mars, IA, Waneta and Gaylen Tevis of Federal Way, WA, Wilma and Merton Jessen of Le Mars, IA and Norma and Virgil Vanderloo of Ackley, IA; a brother-in-law Richard Stroup of Phoenix, AZ; four sisters-in-law, Theresa Smith of Pipestone, MN, Catherine Smith of Brandon, SD, Jackie Remer of Henderson, NV and Margaret Marienau of Merrill, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Shirley; sisters, Dorothy Marienau and Carol Stroup; and a brother Frank Marienau.
