AUGUST C. MESKE CALLED BY DEATH LAST FRIDAY
Rites Held Monday For Long-Time Resident Of This Community

August C. Meske, a resident here for fifty-seven years, passed away Friday, February 22, 1957, at the Akron Hospital, where he had been a patient the last few months due to a series of strokes, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 29 days.

August Meske, son of Ferdinand and Ernestine (Klabunde) Meske, one of eight children, was born September 23, 1878, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was baptized in infancy at Peace Lutheran Church there and confirmed April 10, 1892. After graduating from Lutheran Christian day school there, he attended Lutheran Normal school at Woodville, Ohio. He came to Akron 57 years ago to visit his brother, Rev. Fred A. Meske, then pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, and took employment in a meat market here until 1915. On September 2, 1908, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Lubben, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Chatsworth, his brother, Rev. Fred A. Meske, officiating. They were the first couple to be married in the church after its completion. In 1915, after living in Akron, they engaged in farming in Plymouth and Sioux counties until coming to Akron to reside on April 1, 1944.

Mr. Meske served on the church council of Trinity Lutheran Church, as a Sunday school teacher for almost thirty years, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Trinity up to the time of his death. A man of fine Christian character and friendly nature, he was held in high esteem by his many friends, who will sincerely miss him.

Left to mourn his departure are his wife, Mary; two sons, Ernest, of Akron and Elmer of Brookings, S.D.; one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Ricklefs, of Brookings; a foster daughter, Mrs. Geo. Kleihauer, of Akron; six grandchildren; and one brother, Frank, of Oshkosh, Wis. Two sons preceded him in death—Raymond, as a small boy, and Eldor, who was killed in service in World War II.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church, Rev. Luther a Meyer, officiating. Nephews serving as pallbearers were: Paul Meske, Henry Steinert, Henry A. Stryzewski, Fred Renken, Kenneth and Harold Lubben. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.

Relatives in attendance from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Meske and Mrs. Elsie Ricklefs and son, Dennis, of Brookings, S.D.; Mrs. John Langholz, of Thornton, Ia.; Rev. Arthur Langholz, of Sterling, Nebr., Rev. Norman Langholz, of Sioux Falls.
