THE FUNERAL OF MRS. LONG.

The Largest Funeral Which Was Ever Held in Le Mars.

The funeral of the late Mrs. Joseph Long, which took place at the house at 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon was conducted by Rev. Wm. J. Wharton, pastor of St. George's church, and the attendance was the largest that ever assembled in this city to pay the tribute of love to the memory of the departed and upon the face of each was depicted that keen sorrow that is so deeply felt over the loss of one so greatly loved, and as the solemn words of the pastor told of the glories beyond, the bowed head, the tear dimmed eye, and the throbbing heart beating in unison, their token of sorrow bore silent tribute to the firm conviction of each that the one for whom they mourned would share in those glories, for her whole life bad been Christ-like —ever doing and counseling good, encouraging the weary hearted, and as the song she loved fell from her lips neap her bier it was with difficulty that others refrained from joining for the singing of her praise.

More than one hundred teams made up the long procession which followed the remains to the cemetery and each vehicle bore its full capacity. The services at the grave were conducted by the Order of the Eastern Star of which order she was a member and the scene was indeed an impressive one as each sister paid that sweet tribute of devotion to one whose association had reflected so much brightness and good. After the ritual services Rev. Wharton invoked the blessings of God and silently those assembled took their departure. The floral tributes literally banked the grave with flowers. Among them being a beautiful emblem star of the order, a floral keystone of rare beauty presented by the Masonic fraternity and a beautiful floral wreath presented by the employees of the C., St. P., M. & Q. railway. Other wreaths and floral designs were in profusion.

P. F. Dalton, Pat Hopkins, W. H. Perry, Thomas Adamson, John Perkins and C. E, Corkery were the pall bearers.

The deceased’s maiden name was Sarah Ellen Sloane. She was born in Brooklyn, N. Y, in November, 1840, and was united in marriage with Joseph Long at the same place in the year 1866. In the following year they moved to Merriam Junction, Minnesota, remaining there until 1872. When the St. Paul road came through to Le Mars they moved to this place and ever since Mr. Long has been agent at the St. Paul freight depot. Four children have been born to them, three of whom are living, Dana, who at present is in Lombard, Mont., and Lily and Josephine of this city. One son, Merriam, died in January, 1886.

In her death, all have lost a sweet, sympathetic friend, and while we have been robbed of her presence by the grim reaper, be cannot remove from the hearts of either old or young that tender recollection of her goodness that has left its impress there for life.

Note: She is buried at Le Mars Memorial Cemetery, Block 9.
