Bonnie E. (Bauer) DeMers, 86, of Ankeny, formerly of Spencer, Iowa passed away on Monday August 16, 2010 at Hospice Mercy-Johnston, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 20, 2010 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, Iowa with Father Armand Bertrand officiating. Interment will be at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery, Marcus, Iowa. Visitations will be after 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 20th at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars.

Pallbearers will be Rick Bauer, Larry Bauer, Emery Bauer, Dave Brammer, Denny Bauer, and Howard Bauer.

Bonnie Elaine (Bauer) DeMers was born August 29, 1923 in Scranton, Iowa, the daughter of Peter C. and Fern (Rosbon) Bauer. She graduated from Ware High School, Pocahontas, Iowa in 1941. She continued her education at the National Business Training School in Sioux City, Iowa. She later worked as a secretary in Sioux City during WWII. She enjoyed going to USO dances during these years. She met her future husband, Donald E. DeMers, at a dance after the war. They were married on June 2, 1947 in Sioux City, Iowa They spent the next several years farming in the Jefferson and Elk Point, South Dakota area. Later in life, they moved and farmed in the Kingsley-Pierson area. In 1965 they moved to a farm south of Marcus.

After the death of her husband Donald in July of 1979, she stayed on the farm for several years, until she moved to Spencer, Iowa, where she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. For the last two years, Bonnie lived in Ankeny to be closer to her children.

Bonnie has enjoyed painting in oil and watercolor, bridge, ceramics, golf, sewing, crocheting, reading, dancing, politics and an appreciation of nature, which she acquired from her mother. Lake Okoboji was always a special place for her, where she looked forward to family vacations and enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her children: Margo (Tom) Gates and Keith (Sharon) DeMers, both of Ankeny, IA, and Candace (Randy) Nuebel of Fountain Hills, AZ; grandchildren: Philip (Gina) Gates of Ankeny, IA, Sheila Gates of Gretna, NE, Megan Nuebbel of Scottsdale, AZ; great grandchildren: Jensen, Avery and Owen of Ankeny, IA, and Zachary, Carson and Caden of Gretna, NE; brothers: Bruce (Katy) Bauer of Pocahontas,IA, Dallas (Joyce) Bauer of LaMesa, NM, and Kendall (Elaine) Bauer of Sloan, IA; sisters-in-law: Ellen Bauer of Humboldt, IA, and LeAnn Bauer of Kimberling City, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald; her parents; a sister Beverly and brother-in-law Bob Fernau of Council Bluffs, IA; brothers: Boyd Bauer of Kimberly City, MO, and Garth Bauer of Humboldt, IA, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Harold and Florence DeMers, and Charlie Larson of Elk Point, SD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice, 5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston, IA 50131.
