Lorraine H. (Kavanaugh) Rye, 95, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Monday, July 21, 2008 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. Monsignor Richard Zenk will celebrate. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Garryowen, South Dakota. Visitations will be after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008, with the family present after 6:00 p.m. all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. There will be a Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 4:30 p.m., and a Scriptural Wake service at 7:00 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Lorraine Hannorah Rye was born June 11, 1913 on the family farm in Union County, South Dakota, the daughter of Edward and Catherine (Carey) Clifford. She attended country school in Union County, South Dakota and later high school in Elk Point where she graduated from Elk Point High School in 1931. She attended nursing school in Sioux City and graduated with a nursing degree.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Kavanaugh on December 28, 1938 in Elk Point, South Dakota. They made their home on the family farm west of Spink, South Dakota. Lorraine worked as a LPN for the Akron Hospital and Nursing home. Clarence passed away May 30, 1969. In 1972, Lorraine moved to Akron.

She was united in marriage to Clifford Rye on July 21, 1973 in Akron. Lorraine continued to work for the hospital and nursing home. In 1980, she retired after 23 years of service. Clifford passed away October 15, 1994.

Lorraine lived at the Village Apartments in Akron until becoming a resident of the Akron Care Center in 2004.

She was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron and Catholic Daughters of America. She has been a member of Court of St. Agnes #687 in Vermillion, SD since 1941. She was also a member of Akron Senior Center. Lorraine enjoyed traveling, bowling, and golfing. She also enjoyed quilting and cooking. She enjoyed the times spent with family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her 6 children: Jean Van Wyk (Nelson) of Pella, IA, Jerry Kavanaugh (Belva) of Basehor, KS, Thomas Kavanaugh (Diane) of Elk Point, SD, Kevin Kavanaugh (Barbara) of Sioux Falls, SD, Kent Kavanaugh (Patricia) of Springfield, MO, and Quentin Kavanaugh (Linda) of Safford, AZ; a daughter-in-law: Tina Kavanaugh of Coppras Cove, TX; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother: Harold “Duke” Clifford of Rockford, IL; a special friend: Bill Meinen of Akron, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Clarence and Clifford; 6 brothers: Bernard, Leonard, Walter, Jack “Earl”, Leo, and Ralph; 3 sisters: Florence Gill, Lorretta Beamer, and Ethel Braney; a son: Kim Kavanaugh, M-SGT U.S. Army in January of 2008; and a grandson: Christopher Kavanaugh.
