Virginia “Ginny” Brown, 79, of Akron, Iowa passed away Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, Iowa. Pastor Dawn Quame will officiate. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Merrill, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Roberta Smith was born October 13, 1931 on the family farm near Remsen, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Anna (Redenius) Smith. She attended country school near Merrill, Iowa and later in Woodstock, Minnesota. Following her schooling, she moved back to the area to live with her older sister, Bernice.

Ginny began working as a C.N.A. at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa and later at the V.A. Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

She was united in marriage to Armand Brown on March 22, 1963. They farmed north of Adaville until the early 90’s, when they moved to Akron. Ginny also worked part time as a waitress for two local restaurants. Armand passed away August 29, 2003. Ginny continued to live at Akron until she became a resident of the Akron Care Center.

Ginny and Armand attended Adaville United Methodist Church and later, when they moved to town, Immanuel Lutheran Church. Ginny loved working outdoors on the farm and helping Armand where she could, including driving the tractors. She also enjoyed going hunting and trapping with Armand. Most recently, after moving to Akron, she volunteered at the Hawarden Community Hospital. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her step children: Marcene (Eldon) Heeren of rural Akron, and Larry (Rose) Brown of Omaha, NE; 5 grandchildren; a sister: Amelia “Jackie” Reamer of Las Vegas, NV; 2 sisters-in-law: Catherine Smith of Brandon, SD, and Teresa Smith of Pipestone, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Armand; 5 brothers: Robert, Harvey, Henry, Gilbert, and David; and 4 sisters: Georgia Sorgdrager, Bernice Jacquez, Ann Peschon, and Shirley Marienau.
