Clayton Edward Welch, 46, rural Akron, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 1990, at a Sioux City hospital after being stricken at his home.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 1991 at Brule Creek Lutheran church, rural Elk Point, S.D. Rev. Leslie Hernes officiated. "Rock of Ages" and "How Great Thou-'Art", were sung by a duet of Robert Brown and Gary Tucker. Organist was Mary Abraham. Burial was in Brule Creek Church Cemetery, under direction of Schroeder funeral home of Akron.

Pallbearers were Don Schurdevin, Russell Paulson, Lee Prueher, Timothy Hinkhouse, James Schurdevin, Ray Puttmann, and Eugene Swanson.

Mr. Welch was born Feb. 24, 1944, at Akron, to Orville and Hilda (Hansen) Welch. He was a longtime resident of Union county, South Dakota. He attended grade school at Pleasant Hill country school and graduated in 1962 from the Alcester High School. He attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for two years and graduated from Nettleton Business school in Sioux City in 1965. He was a provider auditor for Blue Cross and Blue Shield for western Iowa and South Dakota for five years. He married Carol Hinkhouse at rural Correctionville, June 15, 1974. He was a comptroller at the Dakota Hospital in Vermillion, S.D. for 16 ½ years. He farmed the last year on the family farm. Mr. Welch was a member and deacon of Brule Creek Lutheran Church, where he served as president of the congregation for several years. He was serving as president of Hoyt school district and a member of the Akron Clinic board of directors at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Carol of Akron; a daughter, Lisa, at home; his mother, Hilda Welch of Akron; and his mother-in-law, Hertha Hinkhouse of Correctionville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Orville Welch, and a brother, Orris Welch.
