Nathaniel Hammond, of Merrill, a resident of Plymouth County for the past forty-five years, died at a hospital in Sioux City Saturday night at the age of nearly eighty years. Mr. Hammond had been in poor health for some time suffering from maladies brought on by old age.
Mr. Hammond was a native of England, where he was horn on February 4, 1845, and grew to manhood
there. When twenty-one years old he came to America and shortly afterwards located at Iowa City near where he farmed until he came to Merrill in 1879. He was united in marriage with Miss Henrietta House in July 1880. Thirteen children were born to their union. Mr. and Mrs. Hammond farmed in the vicinity of Merrill until 1912. In that year they moved into Merrill and conducted the Commercial Hotel until 1919, when they retired from active business. Mrs. Hammond died on March 31, of this year.The surviving children are Mrs. Lillian Stinton, Mrs. Grace Stinton And Fred Hammond of Merrill; Frank And George, of Council Bluffs; Nathaniel, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Heber, Roy, Harry and Mrs. Mabel Hoss, of Aberdeen, S.D.; Mrs. Clara Churchill of Le Mars. There are twenty grandchildren.
