LE MARS, Iowa -- Glendon L. Tiede, 75, of Winterset, Iowa, formerly of Le Mars, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, in Winterset.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Interment will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery, Danbury, Iowa. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the service time Friday at the funeral home. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Glen's life with favorite memories and lunch at Dana Hall in Danbury after the interment.
Glen was born July 19, 1935, in Parkston, S.D., to John J. and Bertha (Winter) Tiede.
He married Helen Lagge on June 2, 1957. As high school sweethearts, the couple served as the "brave and princess" during their homecoming celebration. They renewed their wedding vows during their daughter's wedding on June 2, 2001. Glen said he was lucky to have Helen as his cheerleader in high school, college and in life.
Glen graduated from Tripp High School in South Dakota. He went on to obtain his teaching degree from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, S.D., where he was a four-sport athlete. He received his master's degree at Wayne State in Nebraska.
Glen taught and coached at Lake Andes, S.D., and at Center, Valentine, and Pender, Neb. before moving to Le Mars, where he and his wife Helen lived for more than 40 years. As a business teacher at Le Mars Community High School, Mr. Tiede was known as a no nonsense teacher, who taught students the value of discipline and hard work. Glen also coached at many levels in the Le Mars district, as well as in several community sports programs.
Glen served in the Army National Guard of South Dakota. He volunteered his time and energy for many years with the Le Mars American Legion Wasmer Post 241. Over his lifetime, he enjoyed bowling, hunting, woodworking, playing cards at the Legion, and spending time with his four-legged granddogs. Favorite memories included playing Battleship with his grandsons and building their Friends Forever cabin.
After retiring from teaching, Glen and Helen became part-time residents of Westcliffe, Colo., enjoying the Sangre de Cristo mountains and wildlife. They enjoyed traveling out west, dancing, listening to music, and sharing good times with family and friends -- all of which came together at the celebration of their 50th anniversary at The Oak Creek Grade General Store in Westcliffe in 2007.
Glen and Helen moved to Winterset in 2009, where they enjoyed retirement living at Madison Square.
Most of all, Glen loved sharing special times with his family. He is survived by his wife, Helen; and his children, Glenn and Terri (Rowenhorst) Tiede of Westcliffe, Colo., Vicky and Mike Brenner of Winterset, Iowa, and Brock and Margaret (Brenner) Timbers of Rosemount, Minn. Glen was extremely proud of his grandchildren, Logan and Tristan Brenner Timbers. He shared his love, generosity and kindness with many adopted family members. This extended family included, Richard and Shirley Timbers, Dan and Julie Albert and sons, Joseph, Matthew, and Michael, Chet and Shannon Hufmann and children, Zach and Kylie, the Rev. Jason and Jessica Larson and children, and Joe and Amanda Schieffer and son, Lewis William.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Verola Frey; two brothers, Loren and Ronald Tiede; brother-in-laws, Allen, Norris, and Loren Lagge; and sister-in-law, Shirley Lagge Bourelle.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Middle River Hospice in Winterset, the American Legion Wasmer Post 241 in Le Mars, or the Westcliffe Community Foundation in Westcliffe, Colo.
