Darlene Gronemeyer, 81, of Le Mars, died Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Darlene C. Plueger was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Le Mars, the daughter of Fred and Laura (Zink) Plueger. Darlene was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township, rural Le Mars. She attended country school and later graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1946.

Darlene continued her education by attending nursing school at Morningside College in Sioux City. Upon graduating from nursing school, Darlene worked at a doctor's office in Sioux City.

Darlene was united in marriage to Glenn Gronemeyer May 3, 1951, at Christ Lutheran Church. Glenn and Darlene farmed in Grant Township for several years until 1961 when they moved to Hartley briefly before returning to the Le Mars area in 1962.

In the late 1960s, Darlene went to work for Westmar College in the Business Office until her retirement in the late 1980s. Glen died July 28, 1998.

Darlene was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars where she had been very active throughout the years. She had also volunteered with Hospice of Siouxland helping to care for patients.

Darlene also enjoyed traveling, playing bingo, and socializing with friends. She loved to visit with friends and attend community functions.

In August 2007, she moved to the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Survivors include her children, Greg Gronemeyer and Terri of Woodburn, Ind., Barbara Schuler and Richard of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Richard Gronemeyer and his wife Donna of Wilton, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Korey (Wendy) Behr, Kyle (Shelley) Behr, Brittni Behr, Brandi Schuler, Ben Schuler, Luke Gronemeyer, and Melody and Mackenzie Moritz; five great-grandchildren, Jessi, Trenton, Shelby, Kameron, and Taylor; a sister, Esther Von Hagel of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Laura (Zink) Plueger; Glenn Gronemeyer; and a daughter, Sheryl Belfrage.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 5 p.m. today (Monday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Ben Schuler, Brandi Schuler, Brittni Behr, Kyle Behr, Korey Behr, and Luke Gronemeyer.
