Herman E. Kluver, 84 of Remsen, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010. at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Herman was born July 6, 1925, on a farm south of Remsen, the son of Dick and Anna (Koch) Kluver. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith on Sept. 20, 1925.
He attended rural country school throuhg the eighth grade, and then attended and graduated from Union Township Consolidated School in 1942. He was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remsen in March 1940. In high school he participated in playing basketball and singing in chorus and boys chorus. He helped out on the family farm and on other farms.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from May 1945 to March 1946.
On Nov. 18, 1947, he married Della Sonnichsen at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen. The couple lived on a farm in the Remsen and Kingsley area, and were blessed with six children. In 1968, they moved to the Kluver family farm where he was born. He raised and sold purebread hogs.
Herman was a member of Christ Lutheran Church LCMS, and held several offices including Elder and chairman. He was a member of the Luxembourg Brotherhood. He was also on the Remsen Community Cemetery Board.
He was a member of Plymouth County Farm Bureau serving as vice president, president and voting delegate. He also served on Plymouth County Zoning Board, was a member of the Remsen Lions, and was a board member and officer of the Pork Producers organization. He was also a 60-year member of the American Legion.
In 1982 he was elected to the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors serving until 1994. He also served on the SIMPCO and on the Iowa State Human Services Board.
He was also active with assisting his children in 4-H.
He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, dancing and music. He especially enjoyed going to Branson, Mo., for the music shows.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Della of Remsen; son Ronald Kluver and his wife, Jacqueline of Papillion, Neb., son Dennis Kluver and his wife, Mary Jo of Sioux City, daughter Dianna Kluver and her significant other Spencer Brown of Paradise Valley, Ariz., daughter Bonita Dunkelberger and her husband, Rocky of Council Bluffs, and son Jim Kluver of Sioux Falls, S.D.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; one, brother-in-law, Leonard Sonnichsen and his wife, Nancy of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter Lynette Kluver; two brothers, Edmund and Marvin Kluver; two sisters, Meta Moser and her husband Hugh, and Alma Stabe and her husband Ruben, his father and mother-in-law, Hans and Anna Sonnichsen.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen, with the Rev. Dennis Martens officiating. Burial will be in the Remsen Community Cemetery. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen.
Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen.
Casketbearers will be Jason Kluver, Dylan Dunkelberger, Jason Baumeister, David Sonnichsen, Mike Sparr and Dennis Kroeger.
