WASHINGTON, Iowa -- Donald Eric Petersen, 76 of Washington, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, following injuries suffered in an automobile accident north of Alexandria, Minn.

Donald was born April 8, 1930, in Le Mars, the son of Eric and Vera (Kowalke) Petersen. He attended school in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars High School in 1948. Following graduation, Donald enlisted in the Armed Services where he served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956. On Dec. 31, 1973, Donald was united in marriage to Patricia (Uhl) Morehead. He previously was married to Helen Ericson in 1951.

Donald lived in Le Mars, and later moved to West Branch. He worked as a salesman for Crow's Hybrid Seed Corn. He lived in Vergas, Minn., for 25 years where he and Patricia owned and operated the Sportsman Center Restaurant. Don and Patricia moved to Washington in 1999 where Don worked as a driver for All American Auto Center in Washington.

Don enjoyed the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish. In his later years fishing became his main area of interest.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Petersen of Washington; son, Steve Petersen of Riverside; son, Jack Petersen of Rapid City, S.D.; daughter, Karen Brown of Colorado; step-daughter, Diane Evanovich of Washington; step-daughter, Darla Schultz of Pelican Rapids, Minn.; seven grandchildren including grandson, Brett Evanovich who has lived with Don and Pat for two years; five step-grandchildren; a sister, Joyce Lee of Sioux City; and one brother, Wilbur Petersen of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two infant children.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. Julie Poulsen and the Rev. Weldon Whitenack officiating. Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening. Private family interment will take place at a later date.
