February 5, 1973HEART ATTACK CLAIMS LIFE OF DELMAR BAINBRIDGE, KINGSLEY-PIERSON SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Kingsley-Pierson Community school superintendent, Delmar Bainbridge, 49, died unexpectedly Sunday night (Feb. 4, 1973) after suffering an apparent heart attack in his car.
A spokesman at the Kingsley school said Mr. Bainbridge had been to visit his mother, Mrs. Carl Bainbridge of Kingsley, about 6:30 p.m. Sunday when he was stricken while in his car en route to his home in Kingsley.
It was reported his car struck a tree on the Warren Hobbs property on Kingsley’s Main street.
School was cancelled Monday and Tuesday with classes to resume Wednesday morning following Tuesday funeral services.
A varsity basketball game with Gehlen Tuesday night and a B-game with Hinton Monday night have been cancelled, school officials said.
Mr. Bainbridge, a Kingsley native, joined the school system in 1959 as principal and served in that capacity until the beginning of the 1971-72 school year when he was named superintendent.
A school spokesman said it is believed an announcement on Mr. Bainbridge’s successor will be made following the regular board meeting next Monday, Feb. 12.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Kingsley United Methodist church with Rev. Howard H. Marty officiating.
The casket will remain closed and the body will be cremated. Michaelson funeral home at Kingsley is in charge of arrangements.
Delmar Bainbridge was born April 19, 1923, at Sioux City, the son of the late Carl Bainbridge and Mrs. Charlotte (Graham) Bainbridge.
He had lived his entire life at Kingsley having graduated from Kingsley Public high school in 1941. He received his BA from Morningside in 1950 and in 1958 he received his master’s at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.
He was a member of the United Methodist church at Kingsley, Nash Post No. 140 of the American Legion at Kingsley and a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Bainbridge and Patricia Meyer were united in marriage Nov. 22, 1946, at Kingsley.
Survivors are his wife, Patricia, of Kingsley; two sons, Craig, a medical student at the University of Iowa and Scott, a student at the University of Iowa; his mother, Mrs. Carl Bainbridge of Kingsley; a brother, David, of Kingsley; and two sisters, Mrs. Marvin (Joyce) Wait of Paullina, and Mrs. L. D. (Colleen) Forbes, of West Simsbury, Conn.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1972.
A memorial has been established by the family.
