Lawrence Roling, 98, of Remsen, died Friday, May 28, 2010, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Lawrence was born Feb. 15, 1912, at rural Remsen, the son of Fred and Mary (Reisberg) Roling. He was raised in the Remsen area and attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen.

On Aug. 23, 1938, he married Mildred Ludwig. The couple farmed near Remsen for 35 years. In 1973 they retired and moved into Remsen. Through the years, Lawrence and Mildred enjoyed traveling, dancing and playing cards with friends and family. Lawrence also enjoyed fishing and playing his accordion. Mildred died Dec. 27, 2004.

Lawrence had been a resident of the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen since Feb. 2, 2007.

One of the greatest loves, if not the greatest love in Lawrence's life, was his church and his God. Religion was of the utmost importance to him. He believed that God provided him with the happy life he lived and that God is why he has such a wonderful family.

Lawrence was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, and Luxembourg Brotherhood and was the president for many years.

Survivors include: one son, Fred Roling and his wife, Mary Kay, of Remsen; five daughters, Sally Kneip and her husband, Kenneth, Ruth Kneip and her husband, Bob, all of Le Mars, Diane Ames and her husband, Robert "Butch," Rose Mary Braun and her husband, Rich, all of Omaha, Neb., and Connie Pronga and her husband, Harold of Waukon; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Joan Schroeder of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter Linda Kneip; three brothers, Frank and his wife Catherine Roling, Gilbert and his wife Marie Roling, and a brother in infancy; seven sisters, Theresa and her husband Frank Nacke, Regina and her husband Tony Pick, Henrietta and her husband Al Tentinger, Eleanor and her husband Albert "Dutch" Siefke, Sally and her husband Paul Rodesch, Martha and her husband Ernest Groepper and Mary Roling as a young child.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Tuesday) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy, Msgr. Nicholas Ruba and Deacon Rick Roder officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Monday, with parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters rosary, all at Fisch Funeral Home and Monument in Remsen.

Casket bearers were Dan Roling, Tim Ames, Michael Durbin, Ron Kneip, David Irwin and Nicholas Pronga.

Honorary bearers were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, members of the Knights of Columbus and members of The Catholic Order of Foresters.

Services were entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
