Gerald Herman, 84, of Villisca, died Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.
Gerald Virgil Herman was born Jan. 14, 1926, west of Le Mars, the son of Harvey and Mabel (Gabel) Herman. He attended rural school in Plymouth County and high school in Le Mars.
Following high school, Gerald worked as a farm hand until he was drafted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 20, 1950. He served in Korea from Feb. 27, 1951 until Jan. 30, 1952. He was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of wounds incurred in combat. In addition he was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Service Medal, and two Bronze Campaign Stars.
Following discharge from the Army, Gerald farmed for several years, worked for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co. and in 1973 began work for Parker Hannifin in Red Oak, where he retired in 1993.
Throughout his life he enjoyed cars and antique tractors. He received great pleasure restoring a Model A Ford car and a 1945 John Deere tractor, driving them in parades and showing them to family and friends.
He had been a member of the Model A Ford Club of America, the Villisca American Legion Post, the Indian Creek Historical Society & Museum and the Tarkio Valley Antique Tractor Association.
Survivors include a son, Jeff Herman and his wife Kim of Red Oak; a daughter, Lori Siefering and her husband. Ron of Malvern; a granddaughter, Sydnee Herman of Red Oak; his siblings, Eva Varenhorst of Le Mars, Marjorie Willer and her husband Virgil of Akron, Delores Bohlken of Le Mars, Shirley Baker and her husband Verlyn of Pickstown, S.D., Gladys Mroczkowski of Le Mars, Milford Herman and his wife, Sharon of Grand Terrace, Calif., and Donald Herman and his wife, Gloria of Urbandale; two sisters-in-law, Estella Herman and Nancy Herman both of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Leland in infancy, Milton, Willard and Duane; and in-laws, Harry Varenhorst, Robert Mroczkowski, Don Bohlken, and Elizabeth Herman.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jason Larson of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241. Visitations with the family present will be after 6 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitations will continue Wednesday from noon until service time.
Pallbearers will be Lee Herman, Dean Bohlken, Dan Bohlken, Brad Herman, Tim Herman, and Gary Herman.
Additional services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Nodaway United Methodist Church, Nodaway, with the Rev. Gordon Scott officiating.
