Wendell K. Staab, 74, of Remsen, died Saturday, May 15, 2010, after a long battle with COPD at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

Wendell was born April 12, 1936, at Le Mars, the son of Louis and Louise (Stoffel) Staab. He was raised and educated in Le Mars, graduating from Le Mars High School in 1954. He joined the Army in 1955 and was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va. He was honorably discharged in 1958.

On Oct. 13, 1956, he married Patricia Collins at Vermillion, S.D. They were married 53 years.

Wendell learned to cut meat at the age of 12 with Bud Ross in Le Mars and continued it throughout his life. He cut meat for John Beason, Meats the Taste Packing Company, Sherman Produce and Boyer Provisions, all in Sioux City, before fulfilling his lifelong dream of owning his own business. Wendell and his wife owned and operated the Remsen Processing Center from September 1976 until they retired in 2002 and sold the business to their son and his wife to continue the family success.

Wendell was a member of The Iowa Locker Association from 1976 to 2002, and was named president in 1989.

He had a special connection with the First Baptist Church.

He was an avid fisherman and it was rumored that he never passed up a Budweiser.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Remsen; one daughter, Linda Pick of Perry; three sons, Pete Staab and his wife Ruth, and Chuck Staab, all of Remsen, and Robert Staab and his wife, Angela of Nixa, Mo.; two granddaughters; seven grandsons; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Barr and Delores Autry of Dallas, Texas, Mary Lou and her husband Marvin Moos of Granville; two brothers, Eugene Staab and his wife, Maggie, of Colorado and Jim Staab of Le Mars; along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; one sister Edna Schleismann; one brother Donald Staab; two brothers-in-law, Mark Autry and Alex Barr.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Le Mars with Pastor Jon Meredith officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Graveside military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument LLC in Remsen. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Pallbearers will be his three sons, Pete, Chuck and Bert Staab, and four grandsons, Morrie, Jason and Christopher Marks and Travis Staab.

Honorary bearers will be his granddaughters, Kalee and Emily Staab, grandsons, Cooper, Dalton and Ethan Staab, and great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Jordan, Dylan and Trinity Marks and Alyssa Peters.

Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
