Marian Kilstrom, 84, of Akron, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Marian Alice McDougall was born July 4, 1925, in Howard, S.D., the daughter of Judson and Bertha (DeRaad) McDougall. She was baptized into the Christian faith in Howard, S.D. After moving to the Le Mars area, she was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She attended country school in Plymouth County, and graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1942.

She was united in marriage to Gordon C. Kilstrom July 18, 1947, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Gordon and Marian made their home in Akron. Gordon died Aug. 28, 1972.

Early on, Marian worked as a dental assistant for Dr. R.M. Figg in Le Mars. Later, she worked as a bookkeeper for Gassman Motor in Akron. She then went to work for Akron-Westfield Community School as a cook. In 1999, she retired after 27 years.

Marian was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for many years. She was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher for many years. She was Sunday school treasurer for more than 60 years. She also served for many years in the A.L.C.W.

She was past president and charter member of the Friendship and Service Club in Akron. She was also past president of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 Auxiliary and a former 4-H Leader.

Marian enjoyed playing pinochle and bridge in various clubs for many years. She was avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. She enjoyed reading, ceramics, animals, and watching sports on television. Marian volunteered in many civic and community events throughout the years.

Marian will be remembered for her great sense of humor and the practical jokes played on many people. But most of all, she enjoyed being with her grandchildren and family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her three children: Marsha Watts of Akron, Kent Kilstrom (Julie) of Sioux City, and Steve Kilstrom (Jacki) of Moville; eight grandchildren: Nichole Zoeller, Brian Watts, Derek Kilstrom, Courtney Kilstrom, Kallie Kilstrom, Stephanie Kilstrom, Erica White (Jeff), and Jonathan Kilstrom; two great-grandchildren: Olivia Zoeller and Ellie White, and one great-grandchild yet to be born; two brothers: Judson McDougall, Jr. (Lorraine) of St. Louis, Mo., and Don McDougall (Shirley) of Rapid City, S.D.; a sister-in-law: Shirley McDougall of Coon Rapids, Minn.; her special friends: Deloris Milbrodt, Colleen Barwick, Delores Coad, Pastor Dawn Quame, and Pastor Jean Morse; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon; a brother: Marlin McDougall; a son-in-law: Richard Watts; and a grandson in law: Mike Zoeller.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. The Rev. Dawn Quame and the Rev. Jean Morse will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation was after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present after 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the church.

The Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
