Esther Borchers, 89, of Hawarden died Sunday, August 18, 2002 in Bartelsville, OK. Funeral services were Friday, August 23, 2002 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa with Reverend William Kallestad officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons, Steven, Terry, Rickey, Mitch, Jerry, Chad, Chris, Jonathan, and Justin Borchers.

Esther Odelia Schiefen was born December 12, 1912 on the family farm in Eagle Township rural Hawarden to William and Hattie (Pollack) Schiefen. She graduated from Hawarden High School. Esther was united in marriage to Edward Borchers on February 6,1932 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Preston Township.

The couple farmed in Preston Township for many years. Edward passed away on August 11, 1980. Esther continued to live on the farm until 1990 when she moved to Hawarden, Iowa. She had been living with her son,Ken in Sedan, Kansas since July of 2002.

Esther had been a longtime member of St. John Evangelical Church, where she was a member of the Charity Circle, W.E.L.C.A., and taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren and cherished outings with family.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Joyce Borchers of Sedan, Kansas; a sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Lawrence Muth of Hawarden; 5 grandsons, Steven Borchers and Terry Borchers of Wichita, KS, Rickey Borchers of Tacoma, WA, Mitch Borchers of Olathe, KS, and Jerry Borchers of Sunrise Beach, MS; and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward in 1980; a son Charles in 1999; a great granddaughter, Amy Borchers; 2 sisters, Mary Majeres and Ann Vogelzang; and 5 brothers, Francis, Herman, Leonard, Ted, and Leo Schiefen
