George Hagar, 89, of Le Mars, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at Banner Hospice House in Mesa, Ariz.

George was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Alton, the son of George D. and Marietta Nichols (Van Steenwyk) Hagar. During his childhood the family lived in various towns. George graduated in 1938 from Remsen Public School. He entered the service in 1940 and served in Germany during World War II with the 609th Tank Destroyer Battalion. When he returned from the service, he moved to Le Mars where he lived his adult life. He worked for many years at IPS, later Mid-American.

George enjoyed many activities. He especially enjoyed the reunions with the 609th Battalion. Mr. Hagar enjoyed boating, motorcycling, and cross country travels in his earlier years. For the past 10 years he and Ida enjoyed spending winters in their park model in Mesa, Ariz.

He enjoyed writing poetry and writing letters to the editor (S.C. Journal and Sentinel). He was a avid reader and writer and subscribed to many political and Christian publications. George was patriotic and a born again believer in Jesus Christ. Love of his Country is exemplified in his poetry. Love of God and love of Country and love of Ida were foremost in George's life.

He is survived by his companion, the love of his life and soul mate, Ida Mae Backhaus. He is also survived by four nieces, four nephews, and numerous great-nieces, great-great-nieces, great-great-great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great nephews and great-great-great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Luken Garrett and Marian Groff; two brothers, Lawrence Hagar and Howard Hagar; three brothers-in-law, Jack Luken, Tom Garrett and Roman Groff; one sister-in-law Aileen Hagar; three nephews and a niece.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the Rev. Randy Rasmussen officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Remsen V.F.W. Post #3228 and American Legion Post #220 will be in the Remsen Cemetery. Visitations with family present will be from noon until service time.

Pallbearers will be his great-nephews Roman Arens, Keith Arens, Christopher Moritz, a great-great-nephew Austin Fuller and friends Bill Schilmoeller and Steve Stratmeier.
