Marvin Herzig, 82, of Van Nuys, Calif., and formerly of Le Mars, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Burbank, Calif.

Marvin Herzig was born Nov. 6, 1927, in Akron, the son of Albert and Ruby (McCorkell) Herzig. Marvin was the second of five children born into this family. He attended school and graduated from Central High School in Le Mars in 1945.

After high school, Marvin served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1949. After his service, Marvin attended Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind., and graduated with an electrical engineering degree in 1953. Marvin has worked in the engineering field for more than 56 years. Up until Thanksgiving of 2009, Marvin was working at General Dynamics.

Marvin loved working with wood, making picture frames, wooden blocks, and doll houses. Working out in his "woodshop" was his passion and love. He also enjoyed bowling for many years.

Marvin will be truly missed by so many people.

He is survived by his wife of more than 35 years, Charlotte of Van Nuys, Calif.; nine children: Suzi Raybell (Bill), Duane Herzig (Penni), Katie Simmons (Randy), Gail Jackson (Greg), Susan Craft, Mitch Karasov, Marci Karasov, Cindy Hendricksen and Paul Herzig; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters: Shirley Gerling (Gordon), of Akron, and Bonnie Herzig; a brother: Cliff Herzig (Beret); and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Darrell Herzig; and a sister, Norma Frolkey.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron. Pastor Steve Jewett will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars, with military rites conducted by Wasmer Americian Legion Post 241, of Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be Sunday, Jan. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Memorials may be made in Marvin's name either to Providence Trinity Care Hospice, 2601 Airport Drive, Suite 203, Torrance, Calif. 90905 or the American Cancer Society.
