Lawrence Eilts
March 16, 1906-August 30-1995

Lawrence Eilts, 89, longtime resident of Ireton, died on Wednesday, August 30, at Hawarden Community Hospital. Services were Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ireton, the Rev. Perry Schlefelker officiating, with burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton.

Eilts was born on March 16, 1906, on a farm in Center Township in Sioux County, the son of Eilts J. and Alice (Johnson) Eilts. He was baptized on April 22, 1906, at St. Paul’s and became a member of the church through the rite of confirmation on March 20, 1921, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden. He attended country schools. He was a lifelong farmer and livestock feeder, and continued an active interest in the family’s farming operation until his death.

Eilts was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he had been elected to many offices over the years. He was also a former member of he board of directors of he Farmer’s Co-op Society in Ireton. He was a member or former member of many farming related organizations.

He married Emma H. Borchers on February 12, 1930, at her parents’ home in Plymouth County. They farmed near Hawarden for many years, and became the parents of two boys, Vernon and Bill. In 1944, they moved to the farm in Center Township, north of Ireton, and retired to Ireton in 1963. She died April 12, 1965.

He married Emma (Wagner) Groth on July 31, 1986, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and they made their home in Ireton. She died on February 18, 1994.

Survivors are one son and his wife, Vernon and Marlene Eilts, of rural Ireton; a daughter-in-law, Ardis Eilts, of Ireton; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff and Missy Eilts of Ireton, Jim Eilts of Phoenix, Arizona, Belinda and Rob Harrison of Akron, Patricia and Ralph Thomason of Eagle Grove, Glenda and James Ver Hoeven or Ireton, Carol and Rick Salberg of Ireton, Paul and Tami Eilts of Ireton and Mary and Pat Hendricks of Hawarden; 16 great-grandchildren; two sister, Luella Bultman of Hawarden and Mary and her husband, Charles Ericson of Alcester, South Dakota; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wives; his parents; his son, Bill Eilts in 1987; a grandson, Lawrence Dean Eilts, in 1954, and a great-granddaughter, Elise Eilts in 1991.
