Joseph Delashmutt, 27, of Le Mars, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, from complications of leukemia at Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City.

Joseph Lewis Delashmutt was born Nov. 5, 1982, at Sioux City, the son of Gary and Laura (Durig) Delashmutt. Joe was baptized on May 29, 1983, at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, and confirmed March 28, 1999 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars.

Joe graduated from Le Mars Community High School with the class of 2002. While in high school, Joe worked for Nuebel Chevrolet. He continued his education at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon, studying auto mechanics. He continued working for Nuebel Chevrolet and later for Total Truck Care.

Joe was united in marriage to Melissa Beeck June 3, 2005, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Joe and Melissa were blessed with two children, Austin Lewis and Alex Joseph.

Joe enlisted with the Iowa Army National Guard between his junior and senior year of high school. Upon graduation from high school, Joe completed his basic training and continued his assignment with the 1-113 CAV at Le Mars.

The 1-113 CAV was activated to serve in the war on terrorism under the Iraqi Freedom mobilization. Upon returning from Iraq, Joe was awarded several medals, to include: Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Joe was very proud and honored to have served his country.

Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, attending car shows, collecting antiques and baseball cards. His greatest enjoyment in life was his family.

Survivors include his wife of four years, Melissa and two sons, Austin and Alex of Le Mars; his parents, Gary and Laura Delashmutt of Le Mars; two sisters, Amanda Beitelspacher and her husband Troy and their children Alaina and Carter of Le Mars and Brooke Delashmutt of Le Mars; his father-in-law, Don Beeck of Le Mars; brother-in-law, Matt Beeck of Le Mars; maternal grandmother, Joanne Durig of Onawa; several aunts and uncles, including Dean and Carol Delashmutt of Sioux Falls, S.D., Archie Delashmutt and his special friend Debbie of Blencoe, Lynn and Wally Hamann of Sioux City, Cindy and Tom Woods of Moville, Brenda Durig of Kiron, and Eddie and Norma Martfeld of Le Mars; and many cousins and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Anne and Van R. Delashmutt and his mother-in-law, Judy Beeck.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the 1-113TH CAV, IA ANG of Le Mars will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitations will be after 4 p.m. today (Tuesday), at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
