Paul Lang, 89, of Remsen, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Paul was born Dec. 20, 1920, at rural Remsen, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Cosgrove) Lang. Paul was raised and educated in the Remsen area. He received his primary eight years of education in the rural school system. He attended his first three years of high school at St. Mary's High School in Remsen, and his senior year at Le Mars Central High School, graduating in 1938. He was then engaged in farming with his father.

On Nov. 19, 1942 he entered the Army Air Corps and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater as a pilot and also radio operator, being discharged Jan. 24, 1946. He then returned to the Remsen area where he was engaged in farming.

On Oct. 15, 1947 he married Shirley Daniels at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. They made their home near Remsen where they farmed until retiring and moving into Remsen in March of 1981. Paul entered the Happy Siesta Health Care Center Jan. 22, 2009.

Paul was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus, Senior Citizens of Remsen, R.C. Skyhawks of Marcus and Remsen, past St. Mary's High School board member for two years, past township committeeman for A.S.C.S. of Plymouth County for two years, past member of the Remsen Public Library board for 12 years, serving as president for four of those years, past St. Mary's Church Choir member, and past Oktoberfest choir member.

He enjoyed bowling, golfing, music and building and flying radio controlled airplanes.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Remsen; one daughter, Diane and her husband James Ruden of Marcus; four sons, Dennis Lang and his wife Deborah of Panora, Douglas Lang and his wife Jolene of Benson, Minn., David Lang and his former wife Kathleen of Le Mars, and Dwight Lang and his wife Ruth of Sergeant Bluff; 13 grandchildren: Laurie Ruden, Christine (Ruden) Massey, Wade Ruden, Andrew Lang, Katie Woodard, Pastor Barry Lang, Lisa (Lang) Miller, Jonathon J.D. Lang, Marcus Lang, Chad Lang, Heather Lang, Alex Lang and Justin Lang Miller; 13 great-grandchildren; Joshua, Jacob and Julianne Massey, Allison, Sophie and Tessa Ruden, Ellie and Amelia Lang, Rylee Woodard, Aaron and Abigail Lang, Lillian and Lucas Miller; one sister, Mary Lux of Cherokee; abnd two brothers-in-law, James Smith of Marcus, and George Hankins of Santa Ana, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Smith; one sister-in-law, Wilma Hankins; and two brothers-in-law, Floyd Lux and Dwight Daniels.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. today (Monday). There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., and vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Casket Bearers will be Wade Ruden, Andrew Lang, Pastor Barry Lang, J.D. Lang, Marcus Lang and Chad Lang. Honorary bearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus.

Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen.
