Florence C. "Flossie" McInnis, 86, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Florence Catherine VanderWal was born April 23, 1923, in Elkton, S.D., the daughter of Nickolas and Mary Margaret (Mae) (Bentz) VanderWal. Florence attended numerous schools in the community and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars.

On June 10, 1941 Florence and Richard Eugene McInnis were united in marriage at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. Flossie was a homemaker and raised her children while her husband worked as an auto mechanic. Richard died suddenly on June 7, 1964.

Following his death, Florence took a position at the Plymouth County Home as a cook and dietary supervisor. She worked at the facility for 23 years before retiring. Flossie recently moved to Plymouth Manor where she was currently a resident.

Flossie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. She will be remembered for her great faith and trust in God, her humor, endurance, optimism, apple pie and her famous taverns, chips and special dip.

She enjoyed league bowling and gardening in her spare time. In later years, Flossie had fun working her daily crossword puzzles, teaching and participating in line dancing at the Senior Center, playing bingo at St. James with her friends, volunteering her time as a Peer Helper for Plains Area Mental Health and as a weekly volunteer at the Christian Needs Center for 12 years.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Robert McInnis and his wife Mary of Bettendorf; daughters Mary Betsworth and fiancé Richard Foster of Omaha, Neb., and Diane Scott of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard; a great-grandchild; and two brothers Robert and Wallace VanderWal.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Kevin Richter will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. with a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. on Friday at the church and will continue until Mass.
