David Heeren, owner of Vollmar's Shoes, dies at age 60

David Heeren, 60, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

David Larry Heeren was born April 23, 1949, in Le Mars, the son of Harry H. W. and Regina Helen Catherina (Plueger) Heeren. He attended Le Mars Community Schools, graduating in 1967. Dave continued his education at Westmar College in Le Mars. He received a bachelor of arts degree in social science and took a position with National Foods in Le Mars as an assistant manager.

On June 18, 1971, Dave and Jean Scheitler were united in marriage at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens. The couple made Le Mars their home.

Dave then began his longtime career with Vollmar's Shoes in 1973. He and Jean purchased the business in 1980. Dave was a strong proponent of local business and was a member of the Le Mars Area Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Chamber Board of Directors from 1982 to 1984 and was Chamber Ambassador president in 1997. He was also a former member of Le Mars Sertoma.

Dave was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars where he served on Council, as an usher, lector and communion server. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and a New York Yankees and Chicago Bears fan. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing.

Dave was well known for his positive, upbeat and optimistic attitude.

Above all, Dave thoroughly loved and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Sam and Miranda.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years, Jean Heeren of Le Mars; a son and his wife, Brian and Heather Heeren of Tiffin; grandchildren Sam and Miranda Heeren; a sister and her husband, Marlene and Gary Gearke of Le Mars; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bob and Becky Scheitler of Le Mars, Dale Scheitler and Ellen Clark of Oyens, Karen and Steve Drum of Ames, and Lori and Tony Bohlke of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son Jason Michael Heeren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Friday) at St. John's Lutheran Church. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Saturday. The Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
