Wilma West, 96, of Merrill, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Wilma Louise Kehrberg was born June 10, 1913, on the family farm east of Merrill, the daughter of George and Leah (Schrooten) Kehrberg. She was baptized and confirmed at the Merrill Methodist Church. Wilma attended country school and graduated from Merrill High School in the class of 1931. She attended Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and received her teaching certificate, and taught country school in Plymouth County for six years.
Wilma married Fletcher West of Los Angeles, Calif., on Dec. 18, 1937, on the family farm near Merrill. They lived in Los Angeles for 16 years where, during World War II, Wilma worked at the Douglas Aircraft Company. They returned to Merrill in 1953 and farmed and raised their two children, Karen and Gail, until Fletcher's death in 1972. Wilma remained on the farm until 1995, when she moved to an apartment in Le Mars. In 2006, Wilma moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars. She greatly enjoyed her stay at Park Place Estates. In 2007, Wilma moved to the Plymouth Manor Care Center.
Wilma was a lifelong member of the Merrill United Methodist Church. She was a long time member of the United Methodist Women and held many offices in that organization. She always enjoyed attending Bible classes. Wilma loved traveling and went all over the United States, Europe, and also to Russia and Australia on travel tours.
She loved to read and always encouraged others to read, too. She also belonged to the Women's Federated Club and held offices in that organization. She loved being with her many friends, and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren so much. In her spare time, Wilma also enjoyed sewing, reading, and making cinnamon rolls.
A great joy for Wilma was her love for the Lord.
Wilma will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Karen Cornwell and her husband Melvin of Dickens and her son Gail West and his wife Jennifer of Miami, Fla.; two grandchildren: Mark and Tonya Cornwell of Dickens and Lynda and James Hoffard of Spencer; four great-grandchildren: Jordan, Kayla, Jack, and Jenna; a sister Laura Mack of Houston, Texas; five nieces and nephews: Lori Meyer, Steve Mack, Bob Kehrberg, Mary Beth Kehrberg, and Phyllis Stanton; and many friends.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fletcher, a brother Lowell Kehrberg and his wife Ruth and a brother-in-law Delbert Mack.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Merrill First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery at Merrill. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Monday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be Mark Cornwell, James Hoffard, Jay Dunn, Dean Dunn, Vernon Harrington, and Steve Mack. Honorary casket bearer will be Bob Kehrberg.
A special thank you to the staff for the love and care Wilma received at the Plymouth Manor Care Center, Le Mars and also to the Hospice of Siouxland for their assistance.
