Maynard Johnson, 76, of Le Mars, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at his home in Le Mars.

Maynard Lee Johnson was born October 31, 1933 at Sioux City, Iowa to Alfred C. and Esther (Johnson) Schultz. Maynard attended country school in Stanton Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa. He later attended and graduated from Le Mars Central High School with the Class of 1952. Following high school, Maynard served his country in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954 serving with the military police.

Maynard was united in marriage to Virginette Beeck Oct. 19, 1958 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. To this union two daughters were born, Debra and Shelia. As a young man, Maynard had worked for Plymouth Coop, McCormick Distributing and farmed in the Merrill area for a number of years. In 1982, Maynard began his 23-year career with Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, retiring as chief engineer in 2005.

He was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He enjoyed going fishing at Paullina and Storm Lake throughout the years. He also enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and in later years his great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Virg of Le Mars; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Bob Fuller of Le Mars and Sheila and Robert Williams of Merrill; five grandchildren: Josh Fuller and his wife Sheila of Brunsville, Nikki Sharp and her husband Chris of Merrill, Wes Williams of Fort Dodge, and Kyle and Stephie Williams of Merrill; four great-grandchildren: Dylan Rolfes, Meadow and Autumn Fuller, and Taylor Sharp; a sister, Susan Whit and her husband Lee of Council Bluffs; a brother, Gerald Johnson of Satellite Beach, Fla.; two nephews and two great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred C. and Esther (Johnson) Schultz; one sister, Shirley Schultz; and a brother, Allen "Bud" Schultz.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars will be at Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5:30 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Pallbearers will be Ron Miller, Dave Miller, Curt Miller, Bill Miller, Chris Sharp, and John Anderson. Honorary casket bearers will be his grandchildren, Josh Fuller, Nikki Sharp, Wes Williams, Kyle Williams, and Stephie Williams.
