Edward J. Ruhland, 78, of Yankton, S.D., formerly of Vermillion, S.D., and Struble died Wednesday Oct.14, 2009, at the Avera Yankton Care in Yankton, S.D.

Edward Joseph Ruhland was born March 28, 1931, on the family farm near Struble, in Sherman Township, Sioux County, the son of Nis and Marie (Gysbertsen) Ruhland. He grew up near Struble and received his education at Struble Schools. Ed farmed in the Struble area until 1978 and then was employed for several years with L.G. Everist in Hawarden. He then moved to Burbank, S.D., for several years before moving to Vermillion, S.D.

Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Ruhland and his wife Mary of Hawarden; three nephews: Russell Ruhland of Hawarden, Michael Ruhland of Akron and Gerald Ruhland and his wife Wendy of Hawarden; three nieces: Patricia Ericson and her husband Bruce of Akron, Denise Loutsch of Le Mars and Jolyn Mitchell of Akron; and 13 great-nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents Nis and Marie Ruhland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Struble with the Rev. Daniel Greving officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be anytime after 3 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Church in Struble, where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be visitation Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. The Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
