REMSEN PIONEER DIES

Barney Deitermann Fought in Franco-Prussian War When a Youth

Barney Dietermann, a well known resident of Remsen for many years, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clara McWald, in Winner, S.D., Sunday afternoon at the age of 84 years. His death was due to complications of diseases. Surviving Mr. Deitermann are ten children. The body was taken to Remsen for burial, the funeral taking place Friday morning with services in St. Mary’s Catholic church.

Barney Deitermann was born at Bullen, Westphalia, Germany, October 10, 1846, and in his early manhood worked on a farm near his native home. He was in the military service of his country in 1870 and 1871 during the Franco-Prussian war, and immediately after being mustered out of service came with his wife to this country. They settled in Wisconsin where he worked on a farm for nearly two years, and in the spring of 1874 they moved to a farm near Carroll, Iowa. Mrs. Deitermann passed away in 1880. In 1885 Mr. Deitermann married Mary Kettmann and to this union seven children were born. The family remained on the Carroll county farm until 1896 when Mr. Deitermann bought a farm one mile northeast of Remsen.

Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Anna Sturm, Mineota, Minn., Mrs. Clara McWald, Winner, S.D., Barney, Bonesteel, S.D.; Henry, Pipestone, Minn.; Mrs. Kate Niehus, Remsen; John, Le Mars; Mrs. Mary Deitering, Humphrey, Neb.; Joseph, Elton, S.D.; Mrs. Elizabeth Deitering, Elgin, Neb., and Peter, Le Mars.
