Edward "Red" Bergin Jr., 79, of Le Mars, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Edward Paul Bergin Jr. was born Feb. 27, 1930, in Iona, Minn., the son of Edward Sr. and Clarenda (Wanderscheid) Bergin. He attended country school near his home. Following his education, Ed moved to Le Mars, and worked as a truck driver. He was later employed as a mechanic at Grotewold Chevrolet.
On July 3, 1951 Red enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War with the Seabees. He earned his honorable discharge June 17, 1955. Red spent the next three years in California where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft.
Red returned to Le Mars, and on Aug. 7, 1958, married Carol Kohler in Remsen. The couple made Le Mars their home. Red managed the Eagles Club for a few years before taking a position with De De Beverage in Sioux City as a route delivery driver. He delivered Pabst and Miller products for 25 years, retiring in 1990. Carol died July 25, 2005.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. Red was also a member of the Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion of Le Mars, the VFW in Remsen, Le Mars Eagles Club, and a retired Teamsters member.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and traveled extensively with Carol as his navigator.
He will be lovingly remembered by a son Paul Bergin and his wife Fran of Le Mars, a son Patrick Bergin and his wife Peg of Knoxville, Tenn., and a daughter Mary Nielsen and her husband Ronald of Fairfield, Calif.; five grandchildren, Brandon, Miles and Shawn Bergin, Zachary and Tanner Nielsen; brothers-in-law Milo Harnack of Remsen and Orville Jorgensen of Slayton, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Carol; and two sisters, Kathleen Harnack and Lorraine Jorgensen.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Kevin Richter will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Friday.
