Alfred G. Huls, 88, of Akron, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at his residence.

Alfred G. Huls was born Oct. 24, 1916, on the family farm near Brunsville, the son of Ed and Etta (Harms) Huls. He was baptized in the Christian faith. He was confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. As a young boy, he attended country school near Spink, S.D. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Orban on Jan. 30, 1940, at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill. The couple farmed near Akron for many years. Together, they were the parents of three children, Norman, Karen, and Merle.

Alfred was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. He loved the times spent with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But most of all, his passion in life was farming and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Survivors include his wife of over 65 years, Elizabeth of Akron; his three children, Norman and his wife, Sue of Merrill, Karen Oetken and her husband, Loren of Akron, and Merle and his wife, Sue of Akron; a sister, Lorraine Onnen of Grand Island, Neb.; former daughter-in-law, Donna Galati Huls; eight grandchildren, Chris Lesko and his wife, Cindy, Shannon Lesko and his wife, Julie, Carey Blomberg, Tom Huls and his special friend, Brooke Klemme, Tyler Huls and his wife, Tina, Angela Taylor and her husband, Paul, Amy Oetken, and Tonya Oetken and her fiancé, Troy Scheitler; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Maurice, Conrad, Floyd, and Raymond in infancy; a sister in infancy, Delores; his stepmother: Eva Huls; and a grandson, Todd Huls in 1995.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron with Msgr. Richard Zenk officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) with the family present after 6 p.m., and a vigil service followed by a parish rosary at 7 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Casket bearers will be his grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Alfred's name to Hospice of Siouxland.
