Elizabeth "Sis" Huls, 88, of Akron, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Elizabeth Cecelia Huls was born Nov. 10, 1920, on the family farm west of Merrill in Johnson Township, the daughter of John and Anna (Dondelinger) Orban. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. She attended country school near her home.

She was united in marriage to Alfred G. Huls Jan. 30, 1940, at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill. Alfred and Sis farmed near Akron for many years. Together, they are the parents of three children, Norman, Karen, and Merle. Alfred died Aug. 9, 2005.

Sis was a devoted member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron and a member of Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed crocheting, and in her earlier years, gardening and canning. She also enjoyed baking and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Church and family were always a very important part of Sis's life. She loved the times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her children, Norman Huls and his wife Sue of Merrill, Karen Oetken and her husband Loren of Akron, and Merle Huls and his wife Sue of Le Mars; eight grandchildren: Chris Lesko and his wife Cindy, Shannon Lesko and his wife Julie, Carey Blomberg, Tom Huls and his special friend Brooke Klemme, Tyler Huls and his wife Tina, Angela Taylor and her husband Paul, Amy Oetken, and Tonya Oetken; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Marcie Huls of Le Mars; a brother, Frank Orban and his wife Vi of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Onnen of Grand Island, Neb.; a former daughter-in-law, Donna Galati Huls; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred; four sisters: Clara Wilmes, Mamie Harms, Kathryn Schipper, and Tina Feller; four brothers: Joe Orban and three brothers in infancy, Nick, Alfred, and John Orban; and a grandson, Todd Huls in 1995.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. Monsignor Richard Zenk will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Monday) with the family present after 6 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., followed by a Catholic Daughters of America Rosary, all at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Casket bearers will be her grandchildren.
