Virginia Schulz, 81, of Le Mars, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at Good Samaritan Village-Le Mars.

Virginia Viola Schulz was born Jan. 27, 1928, near Le Mars, the daughter of Otto and Olive (Peters) Sanow. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Virginia attended high school in Le Mars.

On June 22, 1947, Virginia and Melvin Schulz were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The couple made their home on a farm with Melvin's mother near Hawarden. They later moved to a farm south of Maurice. In 1971 Virginia and her family moved near Le Mars where Melvin assisted Ed Ellensohn with farming.

Virginia worked as a seamstress at Aalfs Manufacturing and K-Products. She also worked as a waitress at the Pantry Café, the Truck Haven Restaurant and as an aid at Plymouth Manor Care Center and The Abbey of Le Mars.

Virginia was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars.

Virginia was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed crossword and word search puzzles, flower gardening, shopping, and most of all, playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She will be lovingly remembered by two daughters Margaret (Dan) Huls and Nancy Schulz both of Le Mars; four sons Roger Schulz of Orange City, Rodney (Linda) Schulz of Sioux City, Douglas (Judy) Schulz and Thomas (Maria) Schulz, both of Le Mars; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; a sister Joyce Gotto of Glendora, Calif.; sisters and brothers-in-law Phyllis Sanow of Le Mars, Janice Schulz of Le Mars, and Herman (Marlene) Schulz of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melvin Oct. 9, 2008; an infant daughter Kim Schulz; sisters Maria and LaVonne Sanow, brothers and their wives Lawrence Sanow, Leslie and Jean Sanow, Harold Sanow, Delbert and Lois Sanow, Elden and Janice Sanow; sisters and brothers-in-law Everett Gotto; Helen Hartman, Gladys and Bennie Ahrendt; Kenneth and Mildred Schulz; Henry Mc Hale, Alfred Hartman; Helen Schulz, Arlene Mc Hale.

Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Greg Gabriel will officiate. Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ireton. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Thursday.
