Clyde L. Eastman
Clyde L. Eastman, 98, Le Mars native and longtime resident, died Saturday (Sept. 2, 1989) at The Abbey in Le Mars. He was a former longtime Le Mars banker at the First National Bank.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars with Rev. Robert Grupp officiating. Burial will be in Le Mars Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the funeral home.
Mr. Eastman was born Feb. 8, 1891, in Plymouth County to Edwin E. and Estella Mae Wallace Eastman. He and Edna Gaynor were married in Le Mars in 1928.Clyde Eastman served the First National Bank in Le Mars for 54 years in various capacities including cashier, vice president, president and chairman of the board. He retired on Jan. 1, 1964. The couple lived in Le Mars until retirement, when they moved to Sioux City. They moved to Fremont, Neb., in 1978 and returned to Le Mars in 1980. Mrs. Eastman died in September 1981.
He was a member of the Le Mars Elks Club, the Le Mars Country Club, and was one of the last four surviving members of the Last Man’s Club. He served in the United States Army in World War I. He was a charter member of Wasmer Post 241, American Legion, Le Mars.
Mr. Eastman was a previous member of the board of directors of Le Mars Mutual Insurance Co.
He supported a number of Le Mars churches. The Clyde Eastman Permanent Scholarship Trust Fund provided grant of tuition for graduates of Le Mars Community High School, Gehlen Catholic High School, and Westmar College.Mr. Eastman was a member of the Westmar College Board of Trustees from 1945 to 1971. While on that board he served as chairman of the treasurer’s and auditor’s report committee; chairman of the investment committee; chairman of the business operations committee, and chairman of the nominating committee. He was also a member of several other Westmar committees including building, executive, personnel, and ways and means committees.
A year ago, the Craig ballfield on the outskirts of Craig was named Eastman Field in his honor. Mr. Eastman donated that land for the ballfield after providing the space for many years for the enjoyment of the community.
Survivors are two nieces.
