LE MARS, Iowa -- Bernice Ver Hoef, 90, of Le Mars passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jason Larson officiating. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Saturday in East Lawn Cemetery, Sheldon, Iowa. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, with the family present at 1 p.m., at the funeral home.
Bernice Gladys Ver Hoef was born July 26, 1912, in Sheldon, the daughter of Henry P. and Adrianna (Den Beste) Haze. She attended school in Sheldon and later worked for Dr. Cochran as a dental assistant.
She married Orville Ver Hoef on May 20, 1934, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. The family made their home in Platte, S.D., where Orville managed a Red Owl Grocery Store. They later moved to Devil's Lake, N.D., before returning to Sheldon, where they owned and operated the Modern Appliance Store. She assisted her husband at the store with Iron-Rite demonstrations. They operated the store for 25 years before retiring. She also worked as a receptionist at her daughter's salon, Sheila's Boutique. The couple groomed dogs from 1966 to 1998. Upon retirement, they moved to Le Mars.
While living in Sheldon, she was a member of First Reformed Church and was active in Circle, Bible study and sang in the choir. She also sang with the Sioux County Chorus for 10 years. In Le Mars, she was a member of First United Methodist Church.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters and their husbands, Connie M. and Charles F. Denton of Peoria, Ariz., and Sheila K. and Rodney R. Anderson of Le Mars; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orville on July 27, 2002; and a sister, Mabel Wyette.
