Hilda W. Harms, 97, of Le Mars, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at The Abbey of Le Mars.
Hilda Wilhelmina Harms was born Oct. 18, 1911, in Washington Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. She was the daughter of John J. and Katharina (Rewerts) Harms. Hilda was baptized Nov. 10, 1911 and confirmed April 1, 1928, at Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township), rural Le Mars. She attended country school near her home.
Following her education, Hilda assisted her parents with farming and housekeeping. She lived with, and cared for her parents until they died. In later years, Hilda helped her brothers with house work and farm chores. In the early 70s, she moved to Le Mars. For the past seven years she has lived at The Abbey of Le Mars.
Hilda was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, rural Le Mars, Iowa. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, sewing and crocheting.
Hilda will be lovingly remembered by a sister-in-law Baulah Harms of Hawarden; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Meta (Mrs. Herman) Eilers, Kate (Mrs. George) Carstensen and Theresa (Mrs. Hans) Engel; her brothers Jurgen, Carl, Fred, Alfred and his wife Rita, Clarence, Donald and his wife Mabel; a niece Mary Ellen Snyder; and nephews Wendell Carstensen, Stan Harms and Roger Harms.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township), rural Le Mars. The Rev. Dan Gerrietts will officiate. Burial will follow at Christ Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church. The Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is assisting Hilda's family with funeral arrangements.
