The Rev. Joseph J. Dunne, 83, of Marcus, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Joseph James Dunne was born April 4, 1926 in Chicago, Ill., the son of Joseph P. and Catherine (O'Malley) Dunne. He attended elementary and high school in Chicago. Joseph moved to St. Mary, Ky., where he attended seminary. He earned a Licentiate in Sacred Theology degree from Catholic University in 1953 and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest May 30, 1953 in Covington, Ky. Rev. Dunne served St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Covington, Ky., Holy Family Catholic Church in Ashland, Ky., and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Paintsville, Ky.

In January 1971, Joseph and Shirley Roethler were united in marriage. Rev. Dunne was received into the Episcopal Church in 1972. For the next 20 years he served St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Cannelton, Ind., St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington, Ind., and St. John's Episcopal Church in Mt. Vernon, Ind.

Rev. Dunne retired in 1991 and he and Shirley moved to Cherokee Village, Ark. During that time he ministered to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Cherokee Village and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Horseshoe Bend, Ark. They moved to Leesburg, Fla., in 1999 where Rev. Dunne assisted at St James' Episcopal Church. Summers were spent in Marcus and Rev. Dunne continued his ministry at St. George's Episcopal Church in Le Mars and Church of the Savior in Orange City.

Rev. Dunne was a longtime member of Kiwanis and served various offices throughout the years. He was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. Much of his time in the Appalachian Mountain area was spent ministering to the poor. He devoted much of his life reaching out to others in need.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Shirley of Marcus and Leesburg, Fla.; a brother James Dunne of Chicago, Ill.; nieces Cathleen (James) Klocek of Woodstock, Ill., Mariellen (William) Mader of Bull Valley, Ill., and Therese Brockmeyer of Sturgis, S.D.; great-nieces and nephews Sister Mary David Klocek OP, Bridget (John) Vultaggio, John (Maisie) Klocek, Patrick (Kelly) Klocek DO, Timothy, Andrew and Mary Klocek, Thomas (Gabriella) Mader, Megan and Peter Mader; his mother-in-law Imelda Roethler of Marcus; brothers-in-law Mark (Mary) Roethler of Marcus, Wayne (Doreen) Roethler of Winfield, Marvin Roethler of Lawton and Bob Thompson of Sioux City; sisters-in-law Joan (Bill) Tentinger of Le Mars and Julie (Randy) Hoeg of Wapello; and 19 Roethler nieces and nephews and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law Patricia and Thomas Brockmeyer; sisters-in-law Eleanore Thompson and Sandra Roethler; and a brother-in-law Paul Roethler.

A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 3, at St. George's Episcopal Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Karen Wacome will officiate. Visitation will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. today (Thursday) with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Earnest - Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the memorial service.
