Old Settler Here Claimed By Death

Nicholas Frank, 75 Dies at Home
Monday After Four
Month Illness

Death came Monday to Nicholas Frank, another pioneer of this vicinity, who passed away at his home in Remsen after a four months illness with diabetes, at the age of 75 years. Surviving are his sorrowing widow, six sons and one sister. Funeral services were held in St. Mary’s Catholic church this morning at 9:30 o’clock, with a large attendance, and burial was in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Mr. Frank had been in robust health up to last December when he began to fail, but for two months he was able to be up and about. Early in March his condition took a sudden turn for worse and since then he had been confined mostly to the sickroom, with occasional periods when he was able to be about the house. During the last three weeks his condition grew such that his recovery was despaired of and he sank gradually to the end, passing away at noon on Monday.

Nicholas Frank was born May 14, 1859, in Chicago, (son of Dominic and Margaret (Heymann) Frank) and when he was five years old the family moved to a farm near Caledonia, Minn. After spending 10 years in that locality they came to Plymouth county and purchased a tract of virgin prairie land three miles southwest of Remsen, now owned by the estate of the late Margaret Nilles, a sister of the deceased. Nicholas Frank remained at home to assist his father with the farm work until the day of his marriage in 1887, to Margaret Mai, after which the couple settled on a farm five miles south of town and lived there for 27 years. Through diligent application to their work they accumulated and prospered, and their farm was considered one of the finest in this part of the country. They retired in 1914 and moved into town, living here since.

Mr. Frank was a lifelong member of the Catholic faith and was one of the staunch and loyal members of St. Mary’s congregation here. Reared in an atmosphere of true Christian principles he carried his early teachings with him through life and practiced them in his daily association among his fellowmen. He was a devoted husband and father, and a loyal friend to all with whom he came in contact. Mr. Frank was outstandingly honest and trustworthy in all his business dealings, and his cheerful disposition and characteristic consideration for others won him the admiration, good will and confidence of a wide circle of loyal friends. He was a good citizen and neighbor, and those who grew to know him through life are deeply regretful of his passing and extend their sincerest sympathy to the bereaved widow, children and sister.

Mr. Frank was a charter member of St. Mary’s court, Catholic Order of Foresters, organized 38 years ago.

To the union of Nicholas Frank and Margaret Mai eight children were born. A son passed away in infancy at the age of three months, and a daughter, Mrs. Laurie (Margaret) Achen, died nine years ago. Surviving, besides the widow are the following six sons, all living in and around Remsen: Ben, Mike, Nicholas, Clarence, Lawrence and Lester. The sister is Mrs. Catherine Nothem, also of Remsen. Two sisters and seven brothers preceded Mr. Frank in death.

The funeral, which took place at 9:30 o’clock this morning with services in St. Mary’s church, was conducted by the Rev. H. J. Schleier and was attended by hundreds of old friends who joined the sorrowing family in the hours of their grief. Pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased; John Nilles, Theo. C. Nothem, Bernard Heuertz, John Mai, D. M. Frank and O. N. Frank. Flower bearers were three grand-daughters, Mary Jean Frank, Betty Frank and Rosemary Frank. A committee of six members of St. Mary’s court, Catholic Order of Foresters, of which the deceased was a charter member, also attended in a body.
