Mrs. Nicholas Stoos
Is Called Suddenly

Remsen Woman Passes Away Early
Saturday – Death Gives No Warning
Funeral Held Tuesday

Friends of the Nicholas Stoos family were shocked and sorely grieved Saturday morning, November 5, when the news spread that Mrs. Stoos had suddenly died at the family home east of town. The cause of her death was heart trouble, and a sudden stroke while she was alone in her room early Saturday morning brought the end before members of the family were aware of the fact that she was in danger.

Mrs. Stoos was 47 years old, and a native of Plymouth county. She is survived by her husband, six children, and three sisters. The funeral was held Tuesday morning with services in St. Mary’s Catholic church.

Mrs. Stoos had suffered with heart trouble for years, but was always able to be about her household duties with the exception of about two weeks last spring, when she was confined to bed. After her recovery she seemed in fair health and it was believed her general condition was improving. Last Friday evening she was about her usual work about the yard and house, prepared the supper and with the family enjoyed the evening meal as usual, retiring at the accustomed hour. She was apparently in good health. Saturday morning she was up at 6:30, assisting her daughter in preparing breakfast, but soon complained of weakness and returned to her room. Mr. Stoos, who with his son and oldest daughter was about to begin the day in the corn field, inquired as to her condition and she assured him there was no cause for worry and advised him to go about his work. At nine o’clock the younger daughter, Martha, went to the bedroom to look after her mother, and found her in a condition which caused alarm to the little one. The children hastened to the field and informed their father, who found Mrs. Stoos dead on his arrival at the house.

Mrs. Stoos formerly Catherine Knewel, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Knewel, and was born on a farm four miles north of Remsen on September 6, 1880. Her mother died when Catherine was but seven years old. At the age of 13 years she went to LaMotte, Iowa, to spend a year with an aunt, after which she returned to live with her father. After the other children left home Catherine remained for a number of years to keep house for her father, with whom she moved to LeMars in 1902, living there until 1907 when she was united in marriage to Nicholas Stoos.

For five years the couple farmed one mile south of Alton and for seven years they farmed the Kass farm seven miles northwest of Remsen. Later they occupied the old Hamman farm and in 1917 Mr. Stoos purchased the old Mensen quarter one mile east of Remsen and the family has resided there ever since.

Mrs. Stoos was a lifelong member of the Catholic church and was deeply devoted to her faith. She lived a true Christian life, was a loving and efficient helpmate and a devoted mother. She reared an excellent family of six children, who with their sorrowing father are left to mourn her early passing. Mrs. Stoos was devoted also to her many friends and through her many admirable ways and traits of character won the esteem of all with whom she came in contact. She was a member of the Christian Mother’s society of St. Mary’s congregation.

Surviving her are, besides her husband, the following six children: Catherine, 19; Matthew, 17; Johanna, 14; Bertha, 12; Martha, 10; and Nicholas, seven years old. There are three sisters: Mrs. John P. Arens Sr., and Mrs. John Stoos, both of Remsen and Mrs. John B. Ludwig, of LaMotte, Iowa. One sister and four brothers preceded her to the grave.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning, with services in St. Mary’s Catholic church, and was attended by hundreds of friends of the family. The Rev. H. J. Schleier officiated.

The pall bearers were: Sherman Laddusaw, Frank Lenertz, John Ortman, Anthony Strehl, John Wilhelmi, and William Colling. Those from a distance who came for the last rites were: Mrs. Kate Kaiser, Struble; Mrs. Peter Nemmers, Mrs. Nicholas Hansen and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Groetken, LeMars: and Mrs. John Ludwig and son Henry, of LaMotte, Iowa.
