Arlene Morehead, 83, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Akron Care Center in Akron, Iowa.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa. Pastor Larry Nilson of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Cherokee, Iowa will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitations will be after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009 with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
Arlene Mildred Morehead was born October 9, 1925 on the Dreeszen family farm southeast of Westfield, Iowa, the daughter of Bryan and Fern (Riordon) Dreeszen. She attended country school near Westfield, Iowa. She attended three years of high school in Le Mars and later graduated from Westfield High School in 1943.
She was united in marriage to Lowell Morehead on December 20, 1945 in Sioux City, Iowa. To this union, three children were born, Terry, Susan, and Lance. Arlene worked as a secretary for Westfield Community School and later Akron-Westfield Community School. In 1988, she retired after 32 years of service to the school system. Lowell passed away December 25, 2000.
Church was always very important to Arlene, she enjoyed teaching Sunday school for many years and playing the piano during services. Arlene volunteered countless hours for many civic and community organizations. Arlene also helped in illustrating books for children. She was a longtime member of the Hoschler American Legion Auxiliary Post 186 of Akron, Iowa. She enjoyed participating in the Akron Care Center Bell Choir. She also enjoyed painting, traveling, camping, and playing the piano. She loved the times spent visiting with family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her 3 children: Terry Morehead and his wife Evelyn of Akron, Sue Mann of Alta, IA, and Lance Morehead and his wife Tina of Oto, IA; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a sister: Doris Brundeen and her husband Don of Akron; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lowell; and 2 grandchildren: Tammy Sue Calkins and a granddaughter in infancy.
