REMSEN, Iowa -- Roman Offerman, 90, of Remsen died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Tim Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Mr. Offerman was born Nov. 11, 1911, in Remsen, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Hess) Offerman. He was raised in Remsen and received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. He was then employed at the Remsen Bell-Enterprise Newspaper as a linotype operator.
On Aug. 1, 1936, he married Florence Beelner in Remsen, where they made their home. They later moved to California, where he was a welder in the shipyards during World War II. They returned to Remsen in 1947, where he established and operated the Gambles Hardware Store until its closing in 1958. he was then employed at the Sioux City Journal as a linotype operator until retiring in 1972. He and been a resident of Happy Siesta Health Care Center since May 17, 2000. Florence died Oct. 20, 2000.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sons, Charles of Modesto, Calif., and Louis and his wife, Diane of California, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Charles, Clarence, Elmer, Francis and Donald; and two sisters, Mayme Wagner and Hildegarde Austin.
Pallbearers will be Glenn, Jeff, Jon, Mark, Shawn and Thomas Offerman.
